Why automobiles stall during crossing rails if train is near?(myth explained)

Though the train travel is the best means of travelling around the word, they seems to be a alaraming or threatning these days!  Don`t panic because i'm too a fan of travelling via trains.  But the fact is that since their speed has been increased dramatically there might be a possibility of the train to derail out of its track if not handled by a experienced driver.

Most of the time the railroad accidents are caused due to a human error even in inconsiderable quantity. A small mistake done by the human will result in greater disaster! For example: An officer forgot to close the gate within the time, The drivers who doesn't care about the real time road laws are always prone to disaster.  Other causes might be due to weak rails or due to broken bridge.   Over all causes, the most happened railroad accident we heard in news media is train hitting a car.

Have you ever experienced or seen the car engine dies in the middle of the railroad ?

Surely this is a dangerous and very raging situation such that we will be in a position of saving our own lives! We hope it will not happen to us.  But many times we might hear the case of the rail accident might be a car malfunction or breakdown between rails.  Mostly happen because of the car engine dies suddenly right in the middle of the railroad tracks.

THE MYTH:
If the rail is crossed by the trains, the rail will experience some vibrations generated from train, this depends on the distance of the train from the target (i.e) the closer the train, the greater the frequency of vibration experienced by the rail. The rail has some electric charge, the electric charges will vibrate due to the vibrations produced by the train from such a distance that the electric charge on the rails will flow more quickly and will form a magnetic field around the rail. As per the MAXWELL'S EQUATION, The closer the train, the greater the vibration, it means the greater magnetic field produced.

REAL  FACT:
The myth above is quite stupid because

  •   No magnetic field, with the possible exception of an electromagnetic pulse from a nuclear blast, would disable a car. see my article about electromagnetic bombs by clicking this text
  • Neither trains nor train tracks emit a significant magnetic field.
  • A magnetic field drops off extremely rapidly, based on the square of the distance from the source.
  •  The magnetic field if there  is quite weak, it’s unlikely to even deflect a compass needle, which is very much less strength disable your car.

So, given the fact that a train does not emit a significant magnetic field. A magnetic field drops off rapidly from its source, we can assume the magnetic forces from the train do not exert influence on their environment. Further, we know the car is designed to be immune and undestructed  to any typically occurring magnetic fields. Therefore, we can safely conclude that this theory was cooked up by somebody with an ignorance of both magnetism and automobiles and should lend it no credits to it whatsoever.

Cars very rarely get stuck on railroad grade crossings. Railroads work extremely hard to make sure that doesn't happen. A more typical reason for a stall is the fact that people slow down to cross the grades, and some poorly tuned engines are more likely to stall when going slow over a bumpy path.

When the engine stalls it's because it was starved of fuel and/or air. You see, everything in the engine is on one kind of timing mechanism or another to ensure that the perfect mixture of fuel and air are pressurized just exactly correctly, and the compressed mixture is ignited at exactly the right time or else everything would rip itself apart.

Now, when the wheels of the car slow, this causes the transmissions to slow. If the transmission isn't disengaged from the engine (which is what happens when you depress the clutch pedal) the transmission will slow the engine down to where it stops completely. This is what is known as an engine stall.

Railroad Crossing Safety Tips:

If you experience it, the first thing that you do is honk. get out of the car and ask for help to push the car to get out of the rails.
But if there is no chance to save the car, of course, life safety is the first thing that should be in your mind.

  • Be aware that trains can't stop quickly in time to prevent a collision.
  • Leave your possessions in the car.
  • Get everyone out of the car and immediately off the tracks.
  • Run toward the direction of the oncoming train and off to the side in order to avoid any potential flying debris from the collision.

So be careful when crossing the railroad tracks and do not break through the closed gate!!

This is a great explanation of why automobiles stall near railroad crossings when a train is approaching. The combination of a sudden drop in engine power, stress on the transmission, and fear or panic from drivers can contribute to stalling. Thanks for sharing!

This article provides great insight into the myth of cars stalling near railway crossings when a train is approaching. It's important to understand that stalling is typically due to driver error or vehicle issues, not the train itself. Thanks for clearing up this misconception!
